The Department was established in the year 1948. The department offers
The course includes the detailed study of the new branches of geology like global tectonics, remote sensing, GIS, geomorphology, geochemistry, marine geology, mathematical geology and environmental geology, as well as in details of study of subjects of B.Sc. course in Geology. Field work and dissertation work are also part of the syllabus for five days to one week in suitable area.
Training at the government/professional institutes like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Geological Survey of India (GSI), Space Application Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (SAC-ISRO), Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC), Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), Commissionerate of Geology and Mining, Gujarat Mineral Research and Development Society (CGM-GMRDS), Bhaskaracharya Institute of Space Application in Gujarat (BISAG) etc is also generally carried out for the interested students.
After M. Sc. scopes become much wider. Students can apply for GSI’s Geologist examination or for ONGC they have to clear Graduate Apptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination.
They can also apply and absorbed in Indian Beauro of Mines, (IBM, Dhanbad, Bihar), Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and all the mining companies.
In Gujarat also they may be absorbed in CGM as class I or II officer after some experience. They can also apply and absorbed in Gujarat Water Supply and Sewarage Board (GWSSB) or Gujarat Water Resources Development Corporation (GWRDC).
Temporarily they can work for Water And Sanitary Management Organisation (WASMO) and GMRDS. Various mining companies are also open for them.
