The Department of Microbiology at M.G. Science Institute, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad, has been a pillar of excellence since its establishment on July 20, 1966, by Dr. R. B. Patel. Under the guidance of eminent Microbiologist Dr. S. G. Desai, it became the first Microbiology department in Ahmedabad. Over the decades, it has grown into a leading centre for microbiological education and research, drawing talented students from across Gujarat.

Academic Programs and Curriculum

The department offers a comprehensive three-year and now four years under NEP Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and two years Masters of Science degree in Microbiology. This program delves into various facets of Microbiology, including Microbial diversity, taxonomy, industrial and medical microbiology, immunology, isolation, cultivation, and identification of bacteria and fungi. Students also explore microbial physiology, virology, mycology, genetics, biotechnology, and fermentation processes. The curriculum is designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for higher education and careers in sectors such as academics, research and development, food and dairy, health, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and biotechnology among other. ​

Facilities and Infrastructure

To support its academic endeavours, the department laboratories are equipped with state-of-the-art instruments along with essential instruments; including Laminar Air Flow (LAF) unit, biosafety cabinet, cooling centrifuges, and essential molecular biology tools. These facilities enable students to gain hands-on experience with equipment commonly used in research and industry settings, thereby enhancing their practical competencies. ​ 

Student Engagement and Extracurricular Activities

The Microbiology Society of M.G. Science (MSMG) is a student-driven initiative under faculty guidance that promotes co-curricular activities. MSMG organizes seminars, workshops, field trips, and prepares students for competitive events and examinations. The society also upholds traditions such as annual welcome and farewell events, fostering a sense of community and belonging among students. ​ 

Faculty and Research Initiatives

The department boasts a team of highly qualified faculty members specializing in areas like Environmental Microbiology. Current faculties include Dr. N. R. Goyal and Dr. Payal M. Patel and Ms Komal Chaudhari. Both Dr. N. R. Goyal and Dr. Payal M. Patel hold Ph.D. degrees and have been recognized as Ph.D. guides since 2019. Their expertise significantly contributes to the department’s research output and academic excellence. ​

Engagement in research is a hallmark of the department, with active involvement in projects funded by organizations such as the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST), and the University Grants Commission (UGC). These research endeavours not only advance scientific knowledge but also provide students with opportunities to participate in cutting-edge studies, further enhancing their learning experience. ​

Graduates of the Microbiology program have secured positions in esteemed companies such as Zydus Cadila and Sun Pharma, particularly in roles related to chemistry and Microbiology. With a starting salary of approximately ₹14,000, their success reflects the department’s strong industry connections and high academic standards. Notable alumni include Dr. Rashmin Bharbhaiya, Dr Mrinalini Iyer, Dr Pankaj Nagar, Dr. Rustom Mody, Dr. Bhavini Shah, Dr. Usha Menon, Dr. Bragdish Iyer, and Dr. Chirag Joshi, among others.
