Report on the Birth Anniversary Celebration of Sir Gregor Mendel

Report on the Birth Anniversary Celebration of Sir Gregor Mendel

Organized by: Department of Biotechnology, M.G. Science Institute
Date: 19th July 2025
Venue: Theater 9, M.G Science Institute

The Department of biotechnology M G Science Institute organized a vibrant and engaging event
on 19th July 2025 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Gregor Mendel, the father of
modern genetics. The event was marked by a blend of informative presentations and an
interactive scientific treasure hunt, making it both educational and enjoyable for students across
semesters.

Presentations on Mendel’s Contributions

The celebration commenced with a series of insightful presentations delivered by students,
focusing on three major aspects of Mendel’s legacy:

  1. Life of Gregor Mendel:
This segment highlighted Mendel’s early life, education, and his journey as a scientist
and monk. His perseverance in the face of scientific rejection was particularly
emphasized, inspiring students to pursue research with dedication.
  2. Mendel’s Experiments:
The classical pea plant experiments were revisited, with detailed explanations on how
Mendel formulated the fundamental laws of inheritance. Visual aids and animations
enriched the understanding of dominant and recessive traits, segregation, and independent
    assortment.
  3. Post-Mendel Developments:
The final presentation explored how Mendel’s work was rediscovered in the early 20th
century and laid the foundation for modern genetics. Students learned about the
expansion of genetic research into molecular biology and biotechnology.

Scientific Treasure Hunt

Following the presentations, a Scientific Treasure Hunt was conducted by Semester III students
for the newcomers of Semester I. This interactive activity involved:

  • 10 Teams of Semester I students
  • A series of clue-based scientific spread across different locations on campus
  • Guidance and facilitation by Semester III students, fostering inter-semester connections

The hunt not only tested the participants' knowledge and problem-solving skills but also served
as a creative way for newcomers to explore the college campus. It helped break the ice and
created a friendly atmosphere among the juniors and seniors. The top three winning teams were
announced and appreciated for their enthusiasm and teamwork. The Mendel Birth Anniversary
Celebration successfully combined academic enrichment with interactive learning. The event
achieved its twin objectives of honoring a scientific pioneer and creating a welcoming
environment for new students. Special thanks to the organizing committee, faculty coordinators,
and all participating students who made the day memorable and meaningful.
