Flip Teaching – A Student-Led Academic Initiative

The Department of Biotechnology, MG Science Institute, conducted a unique and interactive student-led activity titled “Flip Teaching” during the academic year 2024–25. This initiative began as a student suggestion in the early part of the semester and gradually evolved into a structured platform for activity-based learning and skill development.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Shivani Raval, students were encouraged to select academic topics of their interest and prepare short presentations ranging from 10–15 minutes. These sessions were scheduled weekly on Fridays and Saturdays, with 2 to 4 students presenting in each session.

The topics covered included contemporary and relevant themes such as Genetic Engineering, CRISPR Technology, Synthetic Biology, Evolution, and Agricultural Biotechnology. The presentations were followed by active classroom discussions, debates, and Q&A rounds that fostered a collaborative and engaging academic environment.

A total of 38 students participated in this initiative, showcasing their understanding and building confidence in public speaking and peer learning. The positive reception and increased involvement from the student body have led to a collective request to continue this format in the upcoming semester as well.

The Flip Teaching model successfully blended academic content with presentation skill-building, nurturing both conceptual clarity and communication abilities among students. This initiative marks a step forward in encouraging student-centric learning practices within the department.
