Course Outcome

  • Understand the principles of photochemical reactions, including energy transfer, excited states, and the fate of excited molecules.
  • Understand the application of photochemical principles to carbonyl compound photochemistry, including representation of excited states and reactions like Norrish type I & II and Paterno-Buchi reactions.
  • Understand the utilization of common reagents such as HATU, LDA, DDQ, DIBAL-H, and NaBH3(CN) for specific synthetic transformations.
  • Understand a variety of name reactions and their mechanisms, including Baker-Venkataraman, Reformatsky, Mannich, Dieckmann, Perkin, Stobbe condensation, Jones oxidation, Vilsmeier-Haack, Benzoin condensation, and Sonogarshira coupling.
  • Understand heterocycle nomenclature, including systematic nomenclature according to the Hantzsch-Widman system, for monocyclic, fused, and bridged heterocycles.
  • Understand the general chemical behavior, synthesis, and important applications of aromatic heterocycles, with a focus on five-membered and benzo-fused five-membered heterocycles like oxazole, isoxazole, thiazole, pyrazole, imidazole, benzothiazole, and benzimidazole.
  • Understand six-membered and benzo-fused six-membered heterocycles, including pyrazine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, cinnoline, quinazoline, quinoxaline, and phenoxaline, along with their synthesis and applications.
